Frequently Asked Questions: Q: What is the easiest way to use this website? A: Just have the applicants fill out the web form on the bottom of the first page, and we will take care of the rest. The employer or position announcer will get the results by email. This is a FREE service! You may also test the web form unlimited number of times. Contact us first at info ATT aceplace DOT com. Q: How do you know it works? Have you tested the tool on any real-world applications? A: Tests have been performed using material from applicants of some recently announced positions for Associate Professors in Sweden. The results conformed to the results of the external reviewers and to the final decisions. See www.aceplace.com for detailed comparisons of results. Q: Can I run the Aceplace exe directly from the web site? A: This is NOT recommended, i.e. choosing "Open" after clicking the "A" image. This will put all the output and demo input files on your desktop. It is more convenient to download the tool to a new folder, since managing the files is easier that way. Applicants may freely use AceplaceFiler, the text file generator, the same way. Q: Why all the text files? A: Anybody can make a text file and send by email, regardless of operating system or web interface. Q: Do you store my name and email address in a database? A: We keep customer records but only for logistic reasons, and to help the users. We do not share or sell this information to anybody else, or use it for any other purpose. Similarily, we only store applicant information from web form submissions until a few weeks after we have sent the resulting ranking list back to the client, and we do not share or sell this information to anyone but that specific client. Q: Would you consider hosting an application process, that is, can we have the applicants send you their digitized CV’s for you to put in ranking order? And then send the result back to us? A: Of course, have the applicants use the web form, and we email you the result! Just let us know at info@aceplace.com first. This is FREE! Q: What if somebody was dishonest about their digitized CV, and just put in whatever high numbers? A: It is fairly easy to check most of the important numbers for the three or four top-ranked candidates manually by using PubMed, ISI, etc. Also, one can check against the paper copies of the traditional application that the applicants a) submitted as usual anyway, or b) submit on your request. Even with these check-ups, the whole process is much faster than the traditional way. Q: I use MacIntosh. Will there be a Mac version of Aceplace? A: A Mac or broad-platform/.NET version might soon become available from this website. However, most applicants can use the web form. Q: What scientific field is the tool geared towards measuring? A: It was intended for Biomedical and Medical researchers, but can be used as is on most scientific fields, provided that the instructions to the applicants are changed accordingly, e.g. from PubMed publication information to some other source for the field in question. Q: I want the weighting to be different, and emphasize other items. How do I do that? A: There are five different weight matices to choose from. They weigh the 11 parameters of the digital cv's using proprietary algorithms. If you have special needs, just send an email with your specifications, and you could get a customized version of Aceplace. Q: Are there other uses for Aceplace than hiring? A: Yes, it can of course be used for evaluations of existing staff! Here it is also the easiest to invite them to fill out our web form. All runs with less than ten participants per run are free. Q: You are not measuring the future potential of a project or candidate, only past accomplishments. Don't you think this will cause a bias towards already established professionals? A: Creativity and innovative talent are hard to quantify, and very few, if any, are doing this. Most external reviewers and research councils just count the number of publications. We go a little beyond that, and we do it much, much faster, which is good for everybody involved.
